Hi Team Ohio! Have you heard about the new team competition of AWSA? If not, click here for a full overview. Basically, every state in the country will be sending a team to the regionals to compete against all of the other states (think Midwest Medal Count from years past). The difference this year is that the winning team will advance to the National Championships and here is the really cool part: a competitor on their state team DOES NOT have to be qualified in their individual event to ski at Regionals or Nationals for their team. Please read below for the complete overview on how this year's Inaugural Ohio State Team is being picked. Though most of the team has been selected (process below), there is still an opportunity for you to make the State Competitive Team as a Wild Card(See Below)!!! And remember - EVERYONE is Team Ohio & we can't wait to celebrate this sport we all love with you at the State tournament in a few weeks :) Read on to see who is on the 2016 Team and learn about the process used to select it. The rest of the TO BE DETERMINED team spots will be selected based on 2016 scores. There is one wild card spot remaining in every event. These positions will be determined using 2016 scores up to and including July 17, 11:59 p.m. Additionally, alternates will be selected using 2016 scores in the instance that a team member is unable to compete at Regionals or Nationals. The Process In the inaugural year of team competition, AWSA has chosen to score the team competition based on NOPS (National Overall Points) points. Each state will send 5 skiers in each event (Trick, Slalom, Jump) for each group (Junior, Mens, Womens). The top 4 scores for each event for each group will be used for determining the winning Team. The scores will be generated through a point system based on NOPS. Meaning if you have 44 slalom skiers that are participating in a team event, then points will be based on a 10-point increment. Example: the skier that had the highest NOPS point for slalom would receive 440 points, whereas the skier that had the lowest NOPS score would have 10. The top 4 scores for each team in each event would be accumulated to become the team score. The team with highest score wins. The Ohio team was selected based on this scoring system. All 2015 Ohio Skiers were placed into a scoring system that used their 2015 ranking list score to determine NOPS for their 2016 division. The top four NOPS scoring skiers for each group (Mens, Womens, Junior) and each division are announced above. To select the fifth spot in each group and event, all 2016 Ohio Skiers will be input into the same scoring system that will use their ranking score that includes scores up to and including July 17, 11:59 p.m. to calculate NOPS. The highest scoring NOPS skier (that has not already been named to the Team) will fill the fifth place position. In the instance that a team skier must forfeit their spot, it will be filled with an alternate selected using the same system that was used to select the fifth place spot. The final team will be announced as part of the State Banquet! Good luck to everyone competing in the next few weeks! Questions should be directed to Team Captain Libby Van Treese, [email protected] & Co-Captain Emily Dammeyer, ([email protected]). All skiers named to the team should reach out to Libby and Emily with their direct contact information. GO TEAM OHIO!!!!!
